Greater PH City Ready In Five Years -RSG
The Rivers State Government says, it will ensure the completion of the phase 1 of the Greater Port Harcourt City in the next five years.
The Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Mr. Desmond Akawor disclosed this during an inspection of facilities at the site of the Greater Port Harcourt City at Igwuruta in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.
Akawor also said that, the government was set to fulfill its campaign promises to the host landlords of the authority, through the review of all contractual agreements between the authority and the host communities.
He said that the review of the contractual agreements was to ensure maximum utilization of all lands acquired by the government from the host communities.
Akawor also said that the new administration was working hard to win the confidence of investors towards the development of the new city, adding that it was the view of the government that the private sector should play a major role in the development of the greater Port Harcourt City.
The administrator, who expressed concern over the poor state of facilities in the area, said that the administration will ensure that contractors are mobilized back to site to ensure the completion of some facilities abandoned by the immediate past administration at the site of the new city.
He also promised to relocate the head office at the authority from trans Amadi to city area, and charged the staff to brace up for the challenges of ensuring the realisation of the government’s vision for the new city.
Akawor told management and staff of the authority to be prepared to relocate to the Omagwa-Igwuruta area in the city within the next four months.
He said that only a quick relocation of the authority can inspire the confidence of ready-to-go investors, adding that there was no time to waste in the planned relocation of the 130-member staff.
The administrator also instructed that action be expedited on the building of a police station in the new city area to ensure the security of investors and their investments as well as individuals who had invested in developing or acquiring property in the city.
He called for full situation report on the proposed amusement park situated at Omuchi as the park was planned to provide entertainment for thousands of families in the state and beyond.
Akawor also called for support from the general public to enable the authority achieve its mission of transforming the area into a new development hub for industrial and residential activities as a veritable means of decongesting the old city of Port Harcourt from crippling overcrowding and over population with attendant challenges for good governance and public health.
