Don urges Buhari To Reduce Political Appointments
A lecturer with the
Anambra State University, Dr Chubah Ezeh, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to moderate his political appointments to reduce the cost of governance.
Ezeh, a senior lecturer in the institution, told newsmen in Igbariam near Onitsha, Anambra, that the move would lower the country’s recurrent expenditure.
He said that such a decision would be the best way to implement the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye committee report on the public service.
Ezeh said that what was spent on the political office holders by the out-going administration was on the high side.
He said that the monthly remuneration of one of such appointees was enough to settle the salaries of no fewer than 50 civil servants and technocrats in the ministries.
“We should know if the actual duty and responsibility assigned to such an individual is commensurate with the fat salaries and allowances of such public officers.
“To me, I do not see and believe that the career civil service is bloated; what I believe is that it is the political appointees and their aides that are bloated.
“You have a minister and minister of state in the ministries where a minister could comfortably handle with a few aides.
“So, we look at it from the point of view of political appointments and not career; and I believe that it will help to save cost for the country,’’ Ezeh said.
The don urged the incoming administration to do all it could to increase funding for capital projects.
He said that the projects on ground would form the yardstick for people’s appraisal of the administration at the end of the day.
