Former Speakers and
other ex-principal officers of the House of Representatives have described the development at the House on Tuesday as a “democratic revolution”.
They spoke against the backdrop of the emergence of Hon. Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the 8th Assembly, which was inaugurated on Tuesday.
Dogara with the support of the PDP members in the House, defeated Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila who was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the exalted legislative position.
The former Speakers, led by Hon. Agunwa Anakwe, spoke when they paid a visit to Dogara at the National Assembly.
Former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Umar Ghali-Na’Abba, who spoke on behalf of the delegation, said the lawmakers achieved another democratic revolution against a conventional wisdom of imposition of leaders by poltical parties.
“This happened not to spite our party but that the legislature under a democratic setting must be independent.
What happened yesterday (Tuesday) was an effort by lawmakers of both the APC and the PDP to ensure their independence as lawmakers.
Whatever must have happened, the new leadership must not be castigated and scorned but should be seen as a means of charting a new legislative course for the benefit of all Nigerians”, they said.
The ex-Speakers, however, urged Dogara and other leaders of the House to put the election behind them by mending fences and embracing the losers in order to move the country forward.
“What we need now is reconciliation, because the House as it is now is divided. And I believe the process should not be difficult, Na’Abba stated.
The former Speakers also canvassed for the amendment of the constitution by the 8th Assembly.
According to them, “We believe that the constitution needs to be amended, and this was done by the last Assembly, but it never saw the light of day.
This Assembly must take up that responsibility to revisit the issue of constitution amendment”.
In his response, Dogara assured the former House leaders that he would ensure that the lower Federal Chamber remained stable.
According to him, “we will come together and mend walls because some people may feel that they have lost. I want to tell them that they have not lost everything, as this remains a leadership that is for all.
Dogara who described his victory as a ‘miracle’, assured that his leadership at the House would not disappoint Nigerians as he would run for counsel from time to time.
