Baseball, Softball Association Set For Competition
Rivers State Baseball and
Softball Association has said that arrangement has been concluded to organize an inter-local government area, baseball and softball competition in the State, between 31st of May through 4th June.
Chairman of the association, Christian Dick-Willie disclosed this while briefing sports journalists at the weekend, in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the primary aim of the tournament is to develop youth in the state and discover hidden talents.
Our primary aim is to develop our youth by bringing professionals together to lone their skills and expose their to the world where they can compete with other talents”, Dick-Willie said.
He explained that eight local government areas, were set to participate in the tournament. The LGAs are; Phalga, Okrika, Eleme and Khana.
Others are Obio/Akpor, Degema, Ogu/Bolo and Emohua. He disclosed that the winner of the competition would represent the state at the forthcoming national baseball and softball tournament next month.
“Honestly, I must tell you that during our little league in 2013, we discovered some youth who went for trials in other countries, besides, three of our players are in South Africa now playing professional Baseball, he stated.
The chairman noted that sponsoring the association has been quite challenging because the playing kits are very expensive.
“Apart from the finance where few volunteers pull resources together to make the game popular, but the major challenge is field where the athletes can train” he added.
