Avoid Intake Of Local Gin, Banigo Tells Rivers People
The Rivers state Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Baningo has advised Rivers people to desist from the consumption of locally made gin known as ‘Ogogoro’.
Banigo disclosed this when leaders of Ward 14, Obuama community in Degema Local Government Area, Rivers state, paid her a courtesy call at Government House, Port Harcourt.
“This local gin is harmful and dangerous to the health, and so people should desist from taking it”, the deputy governor said.
She urged leaders of communities in the state to educate their people on the effect of the gin to their health.
The deputy governor thanked the people of Obuama for their support during the electioneering period, while assuring them of an all-inclusive government.
Responding on behalf of the delegation, Dr. Opalibo Young-Harry, said her victory was in line with the will of God, while praying for the success of the administration.
Similarly, the Rivers state Director, National Orientation Agency, Mr. Oliver Wolugbom has called on the people of the state and the entire Nigerians to exercise restraint in the consumption of local gin, popularly called “Ogogoro” or “Kaikai”.
According to Wolugbom, the call became necessary following series of reports from the local government areas of the state, particularly Bonny, Gokana, Ahoada West, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt, on the rising cases of death occasioned by the consumption of the local gin.
The NOA boss decried the rising death toll caused by the illicit gin, stating that though the sale of the gin is a means of livelihood for some people, life is more important.
The NOA boss, therefore, charged the 23 local government chief orientation and mobilization officers (COMOs) of the agency to reach out to traditional rulers, CDCs, youth and women groups of various communities on the need to discourage the people from consuming illicit gin, particularly at this period.
The NOA boss further charged the Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, security agencies and other stakeholders to do everything possible to tackle the problem.
