Allocation Shortfall: Anambra Pledges To Pay Salaries
The Anambra State
Commissioner for Local Government, Mr Greg Obi, has reiterated the government’s commitment to prompt payment of workers’ salaries and execution of projects.
Receiving the chairman and commissioners of the local government service commission in Awka recently, Obi said that the government would continue to meet the obligations in spite of the low income from the Federation Account.
He said that prudent management of resources would be adhered to while promising to work with them in repositioning and improving the local government system in the state.
“We have been paying workers’ salaries and executing projects across the state even in the face of falling federal allocation occasioned by the slide in oil price.
“Prudent management of resources is important in order to overcome the challenges of dwindling state and local governments finances.
“I will work with the commission for a repositioned and improved local government system for a sustainable grassroots development,” he said.
The Chairman of the commission, Mr Peter Egenti, said that some of the commission’s challenges were maintenance of infrastructure, sanitisation of staff records arising from favouritism and corruption, abuse of procedures and poor attitude to work.
Egenti pledged the implementation of the commission’s two-point agenda, anchored on discipline and productivity.
“The board’s mission is to ensure a total transformation of the local government system.
“We have established the ongoing task force on personnel data to actualise the vision of the commission” he said.
