The Coordinator, All
Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Edo North, Dr Abdullahi Muhammed, has expressed concern over the high cost and non-availability of fertiliser in the state.
Muhammed told newsmen in Auchi that the high cost of fertiliser was affecting farm production.
According to him, fertiliser which is given out by the Federal Government at the cost N2,500 per bag is now being sold for N7,000 per bag.
“No fertiliser at all in the country, all the maize I planted this year which would have done better, I have to go and buy fertiliser from somebody who is not a farmer.
“Before, the Federal Government used to give us fertiliser at the cost of N5, 500 for two bags, but now we are buying one bag at N7,000.
“The high cost of fertilisers is affecting farm production in the country,’’ he said.
Muhammed urged the Federal Government to address that situation, saying that the delay in the distribution of fertiliser would affect the output of farmers.
“We want to appeal to the Federal Government to speed up effort at supplying fertiliser to enable us put in more efforts towards realising a bumper harvest.
“The delay in the supply of the commodity would not only affect the input of individuals and farmers generally, but it would also negatively affect the overall output,’’ he said.
