‘50% Road Crashes Caused By Speed Limit Violators’
Did you know that more
than 50 per cent of road crashes are caused by speed limit violators who are at the productive age brackets?
The zonal commanding officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aliyu Gummi disclosed this during a stakeholders collaboration forum held in Port Harcourt last Thursday.
Gummi, who was represented by Joseph Aremu, posited that the ugly trend is disheartening, said there was need for concerted efforts to stem the trend, adding that inorder to enhance safety on the roads and to halt crashes caused by speed violation, the FRSC is poised to implement the use of speed limiters on commercial vehicle operators.
He stressed that all road users must avoid unethical behaviours prevalent among Nigerian drivers, which according to him include refusal to give way when necessary, flashing of headlights, honking of horn for others to give way, use of mobile phones while driving among others, pointing out that all these are prevailing causes of road traffic crashes that could be avoided.
“It is important to mention that we must ensure that our vehicles are in good working condition while the “safety service in the vehicles are functional and fully deployed by the drivers at all times”, the Zonal Commanding Officer harped, and enjoined the religious leaders at all levels to assist the Corps and take the FRSC ideals to their muslim faithful.
“I passionately appeal to every person here to remember that life has no duplicate .
In his welcome address, the Sector Commander, FRSC, Rivers State Command, Sunday Oghenekaro stated that the forum would be held quarterly inorder to sensitise the public on safety of lives on the roads.
Oghenekaro, while responding to questions hinted that the long queues at the various Drivers Licence Centres was as a result of the large number of motorists applying for drivers licence in the state.
In his remarks, the Vice President General of Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Rivers State, Alhaji Nasir Uhor thanked FRSC for the forum and promised to pass on the information to their followers.
