A Kado Grade 1 Area Court
in Abuja on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old bus conductor, Sunday Emmanuel, to two months in prison for theft.
Emmanuel, who lives in Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for mercy.
The presiding Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Emmanuel an option of N5,000 fine.
Sadiq said that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Simon Ibrahim, told the court that the convict was arrested on April 15.
Ibrahim said that the matter was reported at the Utako Police Station by one Okeke Onyedika of Ekukinam Street, Utako, Abuja.
He added that the convict dishonestly stole the complainant’s Techno H7 phone valued at N35,000 under a false pretence of making a call.
The prosecutor told the court that the convict sold the phone to an unknown person in Jabi Motor Park and ran away to an unknown destination.
He said that the convict confessed to the crime during police investigation following his arrest.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code.
The complainant had told the court “I forgive the convict and I do not require a refund of the cost or replacement of the phone”.
