Smouha Vows To Shine In ACL Group Stage
Egyptian side Smouha
SC booked their place in the last eight of the CAF Champions League for the first time in their history, after sealing a 2-1 aggregate win over AC Léopards in their round of 16 tie on Saturday.
Defeated 1-0 in Dolisie in the first leg, the Alexandria-based outfit levelled on their home ground through a free-kick from Ahmed Shokry in the 24th minute, before Hany El-Egeizy headed the winner into the net in stoppage time to send his side through to the group stage.
Following Ahly’s failure to get past Moghreb Tetouan in Cairo on Sunday, Smouha remains the only Egyptian representative in Africa’s foremost club competition and is determined to honour the national flag during the final stretch of the continental campaign.
“Yes, it’s such an achievement. We are seeking to reach as far as possible in the competition. We are highly supported by the club’s board,” Smouha coach Helmy Tolan told Tidesports source on Sunday.
“I didn’t expect we could score in stoppage time because the opponent’s tactics were largely defensive and all my last-minute substitutes were for the penalty shootouts,” he added.
“We have solid determination to deliver a performance representative of Egyptian football and to prove its worth after some doubted our abilities. We are now focusing domestically.”
