RSIEC Refutes Court’s Cancellation Of LG Polls
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has called on the general public and political parties to disregard the rumour making the rounds that the commission has been restrained by a Federal High Court from the conduct of the local government council elections.
The Commissioner in charge of Legal Services and Political Parties Affairs, Hon. Ngozi Ajayi disclosed this at a press conference organised by the commission in Port Harcourt, last week.
She said that the public had been grossly misinformed about the ruling on the matter involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and three others.
Ajayi explained that there was no time the Federal High Court gave an order restraining INEC from releasing the official voters’ register to RSIEC or restraining RSIEC from conducting the local government council elections, stressing that the court did not give any ruling to that effect.
“We wish to further state that there seem to be a deliberate attempt to misinform Rivers people who are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to vote in leaders at the LGA level.
“We wish to, therefore, urge the general public and political parties to disregard the false information in the public domain and continue with the electoral activities as scheduled”, she said.
Hon. Ajayi reaffirmed the commitment of the commission in conducting credible, free, fair and peaceful elections in the state, adding that the commission had concluded plans to deliver on its mandate.
