In a bid to facilitate their
operations in ensuring free-flow of traffic on our roads, the Rivers State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has appealed to the governments, corporate organizations and stakeholders to provide them with medium and heavy duty low trucks to enable them clear any broken down or crashed vehicles on the roads.
The Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr Sunday Oghenekaro, made the appeal during an enlightenment programme held in Port Harcourt, recently.
Oghenekaro said the provision of tow trucks would go a long way in enhancing their duties effectively and that the absence of such working equipment is hampering the activities of the corps.
He said as part of their primary duties, the medium and heavy duty towing trucks would help in removing any obstruction on the highways in the state, be it tankers, lorry, trailers and other brands of vehicles, pointing out that when such broken down or crashed vehicles were removed immediately after an incident, there will be no traffic gridlock on the road.
The sector commander however lauded the efforts of some organizations and stakeholders  for the numerous contributions towards partnering with the  corps in its road decongestion duties and enjoined them not to relent as road safety is a collective responsibility.
Oghenekaro, who also used the forum to call on parents and guardians to encourage their children and wards to join Road Safety Clubs in schools, hinted that the 3rd United Nations Global Road Safety week which ended on May 10, 2015, with its theme: “children and Safety” was focused on efforts at preventing injury and death to children in transit.
According to him, parents and school proprietors must also ensure that their school bus drivers are professional, checked on daily basis to ensure they do not drink alcohol, take drugs, use mobile phones while driving or drive recklessly on the road.
He further advised vehicles owners and parents to put their children on the back seat of the car and toddlers properly strapped in child restraint firmly on the back seat with doors properly locked, and that motorists and other road users must give consideration to children attempting to cross the road as well as being members of the Road safety club in schools to create early awareness on road safety, adding that “it is a good gift by parents to their children.
Meanwhile, the FRSC in Rivers State would soon test drivers at motor parks and fleet operators on alcohol and drugs before they embark on any journey.
According to the corps, any one found culpable, would be sanctioned or prevented from embarking on such journey.
