A retired school
principal from Ebonyi Secondary Education Board (ESEB), Mr Ikecchukwu Iwuagwu, has urged parents to inculcate good moral and discipline in their children.
Iwuagwu told newsmen on Monday in Abakaliki that fallen moral standards, especially among students, were largely due to lack of proper parental upbringing.
Iwuagwu, who observed that the situation was already affecting academic development and performances of children, stressed the need for concerted efforts to stem the drift.
He opined that most parents have abandoned their duties in pursuit of career, materialism and other social issues to the detriment of the family.
“Very few parents give attention to their children these days, the effect is that children tend to learn from their peers and what they learn are usually the negative things.
“The family is the micro unit of social organisation and parents are saddled with the responsibility of imbibing good moral standards to their children.
“The collapse of the family unit has resulted in the unprecedented rate of crime such as teenage pregnancy, prostitution, drug abuse, cultism, armed robbery and kidnapping among others,’’ Iwaugwu said.
He also urged parents to devote more time in impacting the right values to their children, to stem increasing wave of criminality in the society.
The former principal said there was little the teacher could do in enforcing discipline on the child if parents failed in their duties to their children.
“I think family values and high moral standard will be restored and enhanced when parents begin to look inwards and pay proper attention to daily activities of their children.
“The duty of the teacher is only complementary and may yield no good result if parents fail to play their part in character moulding of their children’’.
