Motorists Fault Uniformed Men Over Traffic Violation

A cross section of mo
torists in Rivers State have faulted some uniformed men of violating traffic rules and regulations on the road.
The motorists who barred their minds in a chat with our correspondent in Port Harcourt  yesterday condemned the alleged act of impunity by uniformed men as they do not have regard for other road users, including the motoring public.
According to them, uniformed escort drove their vehicles recklessly and sometimes against traffic, pointing out that such behaviours should be checked and culprits brought to book to serve as deterrants to others.
The motorists said the attitude of those drivers have been threatening the pubic and other road users, stressing that it is alarming that if no action was taken to ameliorate the ugly trend, it could lead to more loss of lives and damage of vehicles.
They are of the view that the impunity by uniformed men on the roads had become a source of worry to all motorists especially while on escort, adding that they should allow free flow of traffic on the roads and avoid road crashes and carnage.
A company driver, Michael Onoja blamed the law enforcement agents for not doing their best in setting up a monitoring unit to arrest such offenders no matter how highly placed.
Onoja said the uniformed men behaved as if they are the sole owners of the road, and called for a special unit in the police to arrest the situation now.
Madu Chigozie, a commercial driver said the situation is even worse at Port Harcourt-Eleme-axis of the East-West Road, as these convoy drivers do not have regard for their fellow drivers no matter how congested the road may be.
“They even chase some drivers into the mud or deep pot-holes, intimidating innocent road users, and I think they should be called to order”, Chigozie said.
Madam Martha Osuamkpe in her own view said the number of escort vehicles on convoy for a foreign company staff is alarming, as those drivers terrorise their fellow motorists on the road.
According to Osuamkpe, all motorists should be treated equally on the road and those convoy drivers should not take the laws into their hands.
Another driver, Sylvernus  Bobari said time has come for such ugly trends to stop and called on the authorities to take urgent steps.
Meanwhile, when contacted on phone, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Rivers Police Command, Ahmad Kidaya Muhammed said he was not in town and could not comment on it.
