Man Bags One Year Imprisonment For Theft
An Ojo Magistrates’
Court, Lagos last Thursday sentenced a 29- year- old man, Isaiah Marucus to 12 months imprisonment for stealing wrappers, electronics and other items valued at N205,500.
The Magistrate, Teslimi Shomade found Marcus guilty on the three-count charge of breaking into a shop and stealing items valued N205,500, preferred against him.
Shomade in his judgment said the convict was liable to punishment for the offence and “I thereby sentence him to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour.
“Isaiah Marcus is guilty of breaking into another man’s property and stealing items valued N205,500.
“He is hereby sentenced to twelve months imprisonment with hard labour,” he said.
The prosecutor, ASP Godwin Eze, had earlier told the court that the accused on April 25, at 3.00 p.m. at No. 3, Henry Ogoli St., in Ojo, allegedly broke into a shop and stole items valued N108,500.
Eze said: “Marcus broke into the shop belonging to Mrs Tina Jarus and stole two Tiger generators, five wrappers, two Indian georges, weaving machine, sewing machine and a golden chain.”
He said that the accused also entered the shop belonging to one Mr Ugbaka Hillary and allegedly stole a plasma television, DSTV decorder and a video decorder valued at N85,000.
The prosecutor further told the court that the accused broke into the shop of another trader, Mrs Ejiro Ossai and stole five wrappers valued at N12,500.
He said the offences contravened Section 305 (C) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.
In a related development, the magistrate also sentenced 24-year-old Ikechukwu Igwe to six months imprisonment for stealing eight bags of rice and three gallons of groundnut oil.
Shomade, however, gave Igwe an option to pay N30,000 fine, after he pleaded guilty to the offence, and beg the court for leniency.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused had on April 1, at 12.30 p.m. under Trade Fair Complex bridge allegedly stole bags of rice and gallons of oil valued at N83,500.
He said the offence contravened Sections 278 (1) and 285 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
