Male Infertility: Azoospermia, A Major Cause – Expert
Azoospermia, a complete
lack of sperm in the ejaculate has been attributed to the exposure of toxins and abnormal chromosomes in the male reproductive system.
A medical practitioner, Dr Ransome Wokoma revealed this during a chat with The Tide’s Health Desk Monday, in Port Harcourt.
Wokoma explained that a azoospermia was a medical condition of a man not having any measurable level of sperm int eh semen revealing that the condition not only slows the sperm that made in the test is but also associated with very low fertility.
Revealing that there were two major types of azoospermia, the obstruction and non-obstruction, Wokoma said that the obstruction azoospermia was the type that the production of the sperm was normal but cannot reach the ejaculate while the non-obstruction has to do with non production of sperm.
He however said that primary testicular failure, Y-Chromosomes, micro deletions as well as some genetic infertility as contributory factors to azoospermia.
Wokoma stated that secondary testicular failure, genetic infertility due to abnormal chromosomes cancer treatment, radiation and surgery could cause the condition in some patients, adding that excessive alcohol consumption, testosterone supplements, kidney and liver failure were also causes of the condition.
According to him, “pesticides and ortotins exposure, pituitary tumor and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, obstruction congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) and scrotal trauma, medications for inflammation treatment, steroids and some antibiotics could be causative factors to this condition in men. Wokoma said that prevention and treatment of the condition was to know the type of the condition and the causative factor, maintaining that treating the specific conditions that caused the condition could reverse the process and lead to sperm production inpatient. Treatment of the condition could be by micro surgery, using the method to identify the exact location of the blockage and in the case of non-obstruction, treatment should be retrieving the sperm from the test is with assisted reproduction in the form of ICSI to aid family building.
The medical expert further maintained that complete family history and physical examination was necessary in identifying the cause of male factor infertility and further advised patients susceptible to the condition to imbibe the use of hormonal therapy to treat the condition.
