Commission Orders End Of MTN Promo Over Non-Compliance

The Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC)’s has ordered Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) to stop the implementation of its tariff packages known as Tru Talk plus over non compliance.
The NCC’s Head, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, Mr. Efosa Idehen and Head, Legal and Regulatory Services, Mrs. Yetunde Akinloye, said the agency’s records show no formal approval for such promos.
The decision which was reached at the weekend by the commission, said as a new promotional tariff, it ought to receive the nod of the body before commencement.
From available records at its compliance hint, it hinted that subscribers access the package with N5 daily fee to enable them call all net works with 11 kobo per second and 20 kobo for international calls to USA, United Kingdom, India, Canada and China.
Giving further reasons for their action, he said the MTN’s action contravenes section 108 sub section (1) of the Nigeria Communication Act 2003.
They explained that the action was also in fulfillment of its mandate under section 89 of NCC Act 2003, saying thorough compliance check was carried out on the network provider.
The NCC’s arrow-heads, claimed that MTN carried such promos on both the electronic and print media, adding that the commission was not to restore subscribers hope.
Some subscribers and internet users are now of the view that NCC was no longer toothless as believed in the past, following their hard decisions on network providers in recent time.
