Algerian Clubs Make Champions League History

Algerian football made
CAF Champions League history at the weekend becoming the first country to boast three teams in the final eight of the competition since the maiden edition of the format we know today in 1997.
MC El Eulma, USM Alger and ES Setif entered the group stages of this season’s showpiece.
The North Africans were afforded three participants this year following Setif’s success last term which saw them claim their second Champions League crown with a 3-3 aggregate win over DRC’s AS Vita, Setif were crowned champs on the away goal rule.
How they did it:
MC El Eulma were the last of the three to book their place in the top eight with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over CS Sfaxien on Sunday.
Eulma beat Ethiopian side Saint George by virtue of the away goal rule in the preliminary round before edging Ghanaian outfit Asante Kotoko 2-1 and eventually Sfaxien on penalties after the two-legged tie ended deadlocked at 1-1.
1976 champions USM Alger got their journey underway with a 4-3 win over Foullah Edifice before thumping Senegalese side AS Pikine 6-2 on aggregate in the first round.
The second-round proved a greater challenge, but Alger managed to rise to the occasion beating AS Kaloum 3-2 to prolong their stay in the competition.
Setif only entered the competition in the first round as champions where they saw off Gambian league champions Real Banjul 3-1 over two legs.
