No fewer than 600
women will benefit from an upcoming medical outreach by the Medical Women Association of Nigeria ( MWAN), slated for July, this year.
The President (MWAN) Mrs Valerie Obot disclosed this in Abuja at a Donor Parley, in preparation for the MWAN’s first summit.
Obot noted  it was saddening that infant and maternal mortality were still on the increase in the country, adding that it has become important for all stakeholders to pay special attention to the plight of women in the society, stressing that women were the bedrock of development.
She said the upcoming summit would be used to create awareness on all forms of cancers, immunisation and vaccines, sexual and reproductive health, as well as HIV/AIDS.
Obot also stressed the need for women to protect themselves from the increasing rate of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and stroke.
According to her, women needed to be equipped with basic health tips, so as to increase their life expectancy, which  was still low.
She said the theme of the forthcoming summit, “Health and the Nigerian Woman: Creating the World We Want,’’ was part of efforts to scale up actions for the post 2015 development agenda.
She, however, called on women to give priority attention to health issues.
Dr Fatima Mairami, Local Organising Committee chairman of the summit, said the event was borne out of MWAN’s vision to contribute to the advancement of women in all spheres.
Adding that the outreach would enable the women access free medical services and receive tips aimed promoting good health.
“The dismal indices of maternal and under-five mortality in Nigeria continues to leave harrowing impacts on those of us, who have chosen to feel for the plight of our women and children.
“It is our great expectation that this summit will give the road map towards strengthening the public and private sectors resolve to improve these indices,’’ she stated.
