A cross section of vot
ers in Enugu said on Saturday that they did not know the candidates vying for the state assembly seats in the urban areas.
Some of the voters who spoke with our correspondent in Enugu on Saturday regretted that the candidates hid under the campaigns of the governorship candidates in the state.
Mrs Nkemdillim Ugwu, a voter at the Federal Government College polling unit, said she did not know any of the candidates vying for the state assembly.
She said that she had never seen a poster of any assembly candidate but only those of governorship and National Assembly candidates.
“I only came here to vote for my governorship candidate. I do not know anybody vying for state of assembly positions. They did not campaign.
“I think they see the position as a small one,’’ she said.
Another voter, Mr Kingsley Ilonna, said that most of the candidates lacked the courage to expose themselves.
“I do not know any of the state assembly candidates. I just voted for a party not the candidate. Maybe they do not have the kind of money their counterparts at the National Assembly have,’’ he said.
Mr Chris Onaga said political parties were more interested in delivering their governorship candidates and forgot the importance of the state legislators in governance.
“State assembly members from urban areas are not close to the people. It is not healthy for development at the state level,’’ he said.
“Many of them do not have constituency offices to interact with the people,’’ he added.
Our correspondent reports that Enugu is made up of three local government areas. They are Enugu East, Enugu North and Enugu South.
