Union Urges Sanction On Imported Substandard Goods
The National Union of
Food Beverage and Tobacco Employees (NUFBTE) has urged the Federal Government to sanction the continued importation of substandard food products into the country.
A statement issued by the Union’s National President, Comrade Lateef Oyelekan, on Wednesday, said that the influx of sub-standard food products into the country has adversely affected the sector.
Oyelekan said that manufacturers in the country can conveniently meet up with the local demand of production of those food products, stressing that importation of beverages and other confectioneries must be stopped because it is the country that is losing.
He said Nigeria patronizing foreign food products affects the growth of the nation’s economy whereas those other foreign countries economy is being boosted through creation of jobs for their economies.
The labour leaders called upon the president-elect to address the primary problem in the food sector that had continued to create rising unemployment rate in the country when his administration would be inaugurated.
He charged the president-elect to also make it a top priority, the provision of stable electricity supply throughout the country, stressing that stable electricity would be the main key to the economic advancement of the country.
He explained that regular power supply promotes the growth of the nation’s economy adding that where there is no electricity, the big manufacturing sector, the medium and small scale or the artisans are affected.
Oyelekan said addressing the issue of power will eventually set the nation on rapid industrial development as well as make the country become a new investment destination.
The union leader implored the incoming administration to save the sector from total collapse through positive steps and assured the president-elect of the union’s total support in ensuring that the administration brings about the new developmental changes Nigerians desire.
