The Rivers State
Government has declared its support for the conduct of the Local Government Council Elections in 22 of the 23 Local Government Areas of the State scheduled for May 23, this year
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Sam Woka, the government said the timing of the election did not only meet the provisions of the Rivers State Local Government and Electoral Commission Law but was also consistent with the pronouncement of the government last year that local government elections would hold after the general elections.
The statement said the pronouncement then which was based on the position of the State Electoral Commission that it would use the revised voters register as well as the permanent voters cards (PVCS) which became only available shortly before the general elections.
The Ministry said that it was mischievous for anyone to insinuate that the state government gave or pressured the State Electoral Commission to choose the time of election now when it was common knowledge that the Commission chose to hold the election after the general election as earlier stated.
It, however warned those threatening to unleash violence on innocent Rivers people on account of the said election to have a rethink.
