The Federal Government
through the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Sought the assistance of the United Kingdom Meteorological Services (UKMET) on its technical know-how and tools that would assist in accurate meteorological and wealther predictions.
NIMET’s Director General, Mr Anthony Anuforom, while addressing journalists at a workshop on Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference, in Abuja, said the collaboration would ensure the provision of accurate weather forecasting services and products to the oil and gas, maritime as well as other sectors of the economy.
Mr Anuforom said. “We are collaborating with the UK Met Office as they have been in this business for over 40 years. They provide meteorological services to the oil and gas industry round the globe. So these two organizations are forming an alliance that can provide world class services to the oil and gas sector.
According to the DG, the collaboration is also critical because of the need of the agency to up its revenue drive.  He expressed appreciation to government for creating a conducive atmosphere for the agency through its recent infrastructure upgrade to market its products and services to relevant stakeholders in the economy.
He said “funding from the government is getting leaner and we have been told to creatively find ways to make more money for our internally generated revenue. So what we are doing presently is to open up these other areas and one of them is by providing services to the maritime, oil and gas sector.
The DG explained that with the recent unveiling of its 2015 season rainfall prediction, the agency would educate operators especially those in the oil and gas sector on the gains of employing standard meteorological services.
NIMET is here because of the relevance of meteorological services to the Nigerian oil and gas sector. As we all know, weather affects everything and so those in this sector need our services.
