A Port Harcourt-
based lawyer and human rights crusader, Barr. Jackson Assor, has condemned the spate of election related violence in Rivers State.
Barr. Assor, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday, expressed regrets that politicians were taking the law into their hands.
He said election  was not a do-or-die affairs. The Port Harcourt lawyer explained that the way things were going underscored the fact that those who wanted to get to power at all costs had ulterior motives rather than serving the interest of the people.
Barr. Assor said those who wanted to win elections thorough the barrel of the gun were not better than military coupists.
He said that people should learn from the presidential elections in which the incumbent, president Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat to General Mohammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC).
He described Presidnet Jonathan as a rare breed of politician who displayed an unusual spirit of sportsmanship.
Barr. Assor remarked that Presidential election had proved a point that Nigeria was developing in spite of the multifaceted challenges the country was facing.
He condemned the recent killings in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State and described it as dastardy.
Barr. Assor noted that those who killed to win elections were not fit to be in the midst of law-abiding citizens of this country.
He said people’s franchise ought to be used to vote out inefficient and ineffective administration in democracies around the world.
“It is a shame that the youths are being used to perpetrate electoral violence yet they are he most vulnerable in   a decadent society,” the lawyer stated.
“We are obligated to vote wisely and in a manner that reflects our dreams for Africa’s largest democracy,” he noted.
