LASG Denies Multiple Taxation
The Lagos State
Government has denied the allegation of multiple taxation collection in the state.
Speaking to Journalists in Lagos on Monday, the Special Adviser on Taxation to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Bola Shodipo said that the various taxes paid go for servicing different purposes, insisting that only those requiring such services are expected to pay such taxes.
Shodipo said that Lagos State now has over four million out of about 20 million residents pay tax adding that the tax campaign in Lagos State has continued to yield desired result.
He attributed the increase in the number of person paying taxes to the trust and confidence the people have in the state government, adding that tax payers are encourage by the laudable projects the government is executing through taxes.
Speaking to journalists also, the chairman, Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) Mr Babtunde Fowler said that 79 per cent of the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Lagos State government came through LIRS, stressing that taxes paid by the residents are the source of sustenance for the different projects in the state, especially with dwindling allocation from the federation account.
Fowler said Lagos State average revenue still stood at about N20 billion monthly, but that the shortfall being experienced is due to the drop in federal allocation, which is due largely to the fall of crude oil price in the international market.
