Group Urges Govt To Monitor Employment Agencies
The Association of
Enugu State Non-Governmental Organisations has urged government at all levels to set up agencies to monitor the activities of employment agencies for domestic staff.
The Executive Director of the Association, Mr Chibuike Igwe, made the call in Enugu on Tuesday in an interview with newsmen.
Igwe, who was reacting to the recent kidnap of three Nigerian children by a maid, listed some of the agencies to include those hiring nannies, housekeepers, drivers and private security outfits.
He said government should ensure that such agencies were adequately registered and monitored to forestall possible occurrences.
The director advised the national and state assemblies to institute legislations that would mandate all landlords to verify the bio-data and occupations of tenants before admitting them into their compounds.
He advocated the introduction of what he call “Know Your Neighbours’ Initiative’’ to reduce incidences of kidnapping and other vices in the society, stressing that “security is everybody’s business.
“We must ensure adequate security and peace in our vicinities.
“Government and religious organisations should encourage the introduction of ‘know Your Neighbour Initiative’ in order to check incidences of social vices like kidnapping and robbery.’’
Igwe said that the Association was collaborating with the police, National Human Rights Commission and traditional rulers to check criminal activities and abuse of human rights.
