Cult Groups Sack Communities In Etche
No fewer than 2 persons
have been feared dead following a serial attacks unleashed at two communities in Akwukabi town in Etche Local Government Area of the state Monday by two rival cult groups in the area.
The two communities attacked by the cult groups that left two persons dead and scores injured are,, Umuode and Umuekwune all in Akwukabi town in Etche Local Government Area.
A source told The Tide that the community has constantly been under attack by the cult groups due to the absence of security in the area.
An indigene of the area who speak to The Tide on the condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred on Sunday and Monday respectively, adding that the attacks on the communities by these cult groups were uncalled for.
According to the source, trouble started when a group known as (Dey-well) stormed Umuekwene community on Sunday and started shooting sporadically into the air, adding that the shooting scared people and the community became deserted.
“We were in a meeting at our community town hall, we saw people running and the shooting became intensified, people were shot. We were told that the boys went to Ulakwo community because Dey-gbam boys were robbing along the road, so when they reached there and could not find the boys, they returned to our community to look for all the boys who they suspected to be members of Dey-gbam cult.
The Tide learnt that the Dey-well cult group leased terror in the communities, especially in the houses of perceived Dey-gbam followers, adding that houses belonging to them were set ablaze.
It was learnt that on Monday morning, the Dey-gbam cult members stormed Umuode village and started shooting and burning houses allegedly belonging to the Dey-well members in the area.
A source who narrated the Monday incident said that while the hoodlums were wrecking havoc in the village, a native hunter shoot one of the cultist to dead.
According to the source, the Dey-gbam group in a reprisal attack mission started shooting any one at sight and killed one person.
When our correspondent visited the communities, reports that the entire areas were deserted and people were seen carrying their properties to neighbouring villages for fear of attack.
When contacted, the state police public relation officer, DSP Muhammed Ahmed, was yet to issue a statement on the attack.
