Traditional Rulers’ Council has extolled the virtues of the late Sen. Uche Chukwumerije, saying he had contributed to the socio-political development of the nation for six decades.
The Chairman of the council, Igwe Chukwuemeka Ilouno, made the remark on Wednesday while reacting to the death of the late senator.
“We (monarchs) have known Chukwumerije as one of the few Nigerians anyone can count on his words,’’ Ilouno said.
He noted that Chukwumereije was a fine gentleman, a devoted Christian and a lover of people who stood for the development of society.
The monarch said that the late educationist and legislator, devoted the best part of his adult years in the service of the nation and propagation of truth.
“Nigeria has lost one of her most illustrious sons.
“Sen. Uche Chukwumerije has not only been around for the past six decades but has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the country.
“A principled man, whose no is no and yes is yes, a man that will always stand by what he believes in and never get involved in any shady deals both in his public and private life.
“As a Federal Minister of Information under the retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s regime, he did his best to ensure that government programmes were widely carried out.’’
On his enormous contribution to the course of the development of the South-East and South-South, Ilouno said that “a great iroko has fallen’’.
“His immeasurable role during the Nigeria/Biafra war cannot be forgotten in a hurry.
“He is somebody who worked tirelessly for the Igbo nation, especially under the umbrella of Ohaneze Nd’Igbo.
“As a senator, he did not only perform creditably well but ensured that the Igbo Agenda was never swept under the carpet at any given time,’’ he said.
Ilouno prayed that God will grant his gentle soul eternal rest and his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
