Club of Lagos can bounce back after losing their first game in the ongoing 2015 DStv Premier Basketball League, the club’s Head Coach, Ayinla Johnson, has said.
Johnson said on Monday in Lagos that he regretted the team’s 40-61 loss to Nigeria Customs of Lagos while he was on a national assignment.
He however told newsmen that since he came back he had seen the readiness of the boys to re-launch themselves into the league competition.
“I am impressed with their level of preparation and the co-operation of the players. I am confident the team can come back, with the capabilities of the players.
“However, it is good to be back with the Union Bank team, although it is an honour to work with the national team. It is a role I cherish so much.
“The loss to Customs simply shows that there is a lot to be done because we cannot afford to start the season on a poor note,” Johnson said.
He said the team’s fitness level was vital and that would be the main focus as they prepare to face city rivals Lagos Islanders in their second match in Lagos.
“It will be a cracker, since Islanders also lost their season opening match to Kwara Falcons in Ilorin.
“So, we have to up our game and train hard in our offensive and defensive play because the Islanders’ challenge will be tough,” the coach said.
Also, Union Bank’s captain, Obum Onya who is down with an injury, said that the team would beat Islanders to get back into reckoning.
“We have been preparing hard for the coming match, although I will not be in action for my team due to the knee injury I am currently nursing.
“However, I have confidence in my teammates’ abilities to rise to the occasion.
“Union Bank will stop at nothing to get the necessary win when we meet Islanders on Friday in Lagos,’’ he said.
