The people of Emughan,
in the Abua/Odual local government area, (ABOLGA) of Rivers State, have been called upon to embrace all-year farming to enable them fight poverty, unemployment and hunger in the area.
Giving the charge in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, an agricultural engineer, Mensah Muzan, said such activities are capable of putting food on the tables of the people of the area all – year round.
According to him, complaints of poverty associated with idleness especially those living at home would be a thing of the past if they actively engage themselves in all-year farming.
“If people of the area embrace all-year farming, poverty, unemployment and the unnecessary looking upto politicians for empowerment will be a thing of the past”, he said,
Muzan, who is also known for his hardline stance on issues affecting the welfare of the people of the area accused the youths for playing into the hands of politicians through their idleness.
He noted that no politician “worth his salt” can approach anyone gainfully engaged in his or her farm work to forment trouble.
“Most serious farmers in the  rural areas were seen going to their farms on election days because they know that is where their wealth and wellbeing lie”, he said.
He further urged the people to take advantage of the favourable weather conditions for the 2015 rainfall predictions by Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and engage actively in farming to enable them harvest assorted food crops for their consumption and sale.
“If people got involved in all -year farming, every manner of food crops would be available for consumption and local export”, he said.
