Unionist Condemns Indiscriminate Trucks Parking
The indiscriminate
parking and reckless driving by tanker, trailer and container laden truck drivers within and outside Port Harcourt has been condemned, as it poses great danger to safety of lives and property in the state.
A unionist and member of the Luxury Bus Drivers Association (LBDA), Rivers State chapter, Comrade Chike Emefule, made the condemnation in an interview with our correspondent in Port Harcourt yesterday.
Emefule said it is an eyesore and of great concern that most drivers do not have regard for their fellow drivers on the road, describing it as unfortunate.
The union member said the menace of the drivers had reached an alarming level that if not checked would cause loss of lives and continued traffic grid lock in the state.
According to him, the current traffic gridlock in the state has been attributed to the tankers and trailers that litter the roads and called on the authorities to properly regulate them or take appropriate action against defaulters to allow free flow of traffic.
He noted that most of these drivers threatened the lives of other drivers with their reckless manner of driving and packing without minding the dangers they pose for other road users, stressing that the situation has grown worse in recent times.
Emefule opined that most major roads in Port Harcourt and its environs were affected, even that of Abonnema Wharf Road to UTC axis of Port Harcourt, due to the tank farm in the area, and further called for proper control to stop the incessant congestion and indiscriminate parking of petroleum tankers along the road.
He said the movement of tankers, trucks and trailers in the day should be minimised and monitored as they destroy most of the roads and kill innocent people.
“Government and relevant authorities should take urgent steps to stem the ugly trend and save lives,” the comrade concluded.
