The National Agency
for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP) has said that it rescued 293 persons in the five states of its Kano Zone in 2014.
The agency’s Head of Public Enlightenment Unit, Alhaji Abba Aliyu, announced the figure in an interview with newsmen in Kano on Thursday.
Aliyu said the victims were men, women and children between the ages of 10 and 17.
He said the victims were rescued from traffickers who engaged in illegal activities in the zone.
Aliyu said that 80 per cent of the victims was female while the remaining 20 per cent was male.
“The command had in 2014 recorded 70 cases of human trafficking that involved domestic and international trafficking.
“We also recorded a number of other cases of crimes against children within the period under review,” Aliyu said.
He added that the agency successfully investigated all the cases and charged the suspects to court.
“Among the 70 arrested suspects, we have also secured the conviction of 16, while the other cases are still pending,” he said.
Aliyu said that the suspects were sentenced to various jail terms of between five years and 10 years each.
He added that the command had so far recorded seven cases of the crime this year while four victims were rescued.
The five states in the command are Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi.
