Motorist Tasks Pedestrians On Use Of Footbridges
The need for people to
always make use of the Pedestrian bridges in Port Harcourt has been stressed.
A concerned citizen and motorist, Alabo Felix Ajumbongodaka who made the call during a chat with The Tide correspondent in Port Harcourt on Monday said rather than use the footbridges; people risk their lives by crossing the major roads amidst speeding vehicles.
Ajumbongodaka said that the pedestrian bridges were constructed by government at strategic places on major roads especially Port Harcourt-Aba express way in the state to ensure safety of lives and reduce carnage on the road, but wondered why it had been neglected by pedestrians.
According to him, time has come for government and other relevant authorities to ensure strict compliance of the facilities to save lives, by ensuring that whoever that infringed the law within the areas where pedestrian bridges were constructed should be arrested and prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others in the state.
He said government had the interest of the pedestrians at heart by spending huge sums of money to construct the bridges and such should not be under-utilised or abandoned.
He also used the forum to call on road users to be conscious on the road in order to save the lives of innocent citizens in the state, while again enjoining pedestrians to always cross the roads at zebra crossings.
