President Goodluck Ebele
Jonathan has assured Nigerians that the Primary Health Sector would soon be free of the prevalent immunization – prone diseases.
The president gave the assurance during a live broadcast of his interactive session with Nigerian Young Professionals in Abuja, last Sunday.
Jonathan who noted that Guinea worms infection had been eradicated in the country said also that polio was last reported in July 2014, assuring that other similar diseases would soon fizzle out.
According to him “in the primary health sector for example, guinea worms have been completely eradicated and polio, a disease that is common not only to Nigeria but the whole world has its last case reported in July last year”.
While noting that statistics in that part of the health sector has greatly improved, Jonathan maintained that there would be continuity in the training and retraining of health workers and individuals to cater for the maternal and general health needs of the Nigerian citizens.
Highlighting his administration’s achievements in the tertiary health sector, President Jonathan stated that there were qualified and functional University Teaching Hospitals across the country that take care of major operational health needs of Nigerians.
“From 1999 when I became the deputy governor of my state, major surgeries were not in operation in the country. So many Nigerians go out of the country for major operations even though there were university teaching hospitals in most of the federal tertiary institutions but the situation is not the same now. The University Teaching Hospitals of Benin, Ibadan, Lagos and Nsukka all have major open surgeries successfully carried out with a lot of Nigerians no longer spending so much money flying abroad for such health needs”.
Commending Nigerians for their partnership with government at all levels, Jonathan said “we were able to handle the Ebola virus scourge because you all cooperated with the government and today the nation is certified free of the virus”.
