INEC Distributes 87% PVCs In Rivers
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Rivers, on Wednesday said it had distributed about 2,175,000 (or 87 per cent) of 2,469,383 Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) in the State.
Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers, Dame Gesila Khan, stated this during an interactive session with religion leaders in Port Harcourt.
Khan restated the commission’s readiness to deliver free, fair and credible elections, adding that INEC was concerned with active voters’ participation in the elections.
“The commission, in its bid to conduct most credible, free and fair elections in 2015, has embarked on so many programmes for the success of the elections.
“These include the distribution of PVCs. We received 2,469,383 PVCs as at March 18, and 87 per cent has been distributed’’, she said.
Khan explained that the card reader and other innovations by INEC were designed to reduce rigging in the elections.
The REC said: “we now have customised ballot papers for different polling units as well as customised ballot boxes with different colours.’’
“Presidential elections now have red covered ballot boxes, Senate has black covered boxes while House of Representatives has green covered boxes for voting’’,
The commissioner called on religion leaders to propagate messages of peace in their various assemblies, noting that the role of religious organisations was indispensible in fostering indivisible Nigeria.
According to her, in this part of the country, we are very religious and we so much have confidence in our religion leaders.
Khan urged religious organisations to continue to run programmes that would ensure sustainable development and unity of the country, especially as elections draws nearer.
Highlight of the meeting was the demonstration of the functions of the card reader to those present.
