Counsel Hails Judgment On Environmental Sanitation
A Port Harcourt-
based lawyer and human rights crusader, Barr. Jackson Assor, has described the judgment of the Lagos State High Court on Environmental Sanitation which limited the freedom of movement as landmark.
Barr. Assor, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt Monday noted that the environmental sanitation law which limited the constitutional provision of freedom of movement was a carry-over of the decrees of the military.
He remarked that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended was the grand-norm and any other law that was inconsistent with the constitution, was to the extent of that inconsistency null and void.
Barr. Assor said over the years, Nigerians had sheepishly obeyed the sanitation limitation law until the recent decision.
He said the judgment had become a judicial precedent.
The Port Harcourt lawyer explained that Lagos State judiciary had become a pacesetter on the issue of justice.
He pointed out that the Lagos State judiciary had continued to play leadership roles by virtue of the content of judgment delivered in the area.
Barr. Assor recalled that it was also a high court in Lagos that nullified interim government.
He described the sanitation law as reminiscent of the dictatorial tendencies of the military and expressed surprise that such laws were allowed to survive the military.
