The Rivers State Governor and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi has alleged that recent arrests and killings of APC members were masterminded by the President’s wife, Dame Patience Jonathan in partnership with the Nigeria Police.
While briefing newsmen over the clampdown on APC members by the police in Government House on Monday in Port Harcourt, the governor disclosed that so far, over 400 of the party members are either in detention or charged to court over trumped up charges.
He blamed the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the development, saying, “it is the last resort and only way of stopping the victory of the APC in the forthcoming elections based on the popularity and acceptability of the APC candidates amongst Rivers voters.”
The governor said the current onslaught against the party had become worrisome following withdrawal of security personnel to its gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, stressing that it is another ploy to assassinate the governorship hopeful.
Further accusing the police of colluding with the president’s wife, he said, “unfortunately, this has led to a great escalation of these acts of killings, unlawful arrests and detention on frivolous and unsubstantiated reasons as well as constant and un-abating harassment using the very same police meant to protect all sides.”
According to him, among those killed without full investigation were Thomas Wogu, Weli Okabie, Ngozin Omordu, Chima Ovunwo, Nnamdi Peter, Maduba Sampson, and Obele Piri.
He also listed about 307 of its members who are under watch and constant threat to their lives.
Frowning over police deliberate partisanship and attempt to worsen the insecurity in the state, he remarked that, “the IG cannot claim ignorance of the huge security gap that the administration of Rt. Hon Chibuike Amaechi has filled in Rivers State over the years. We are thus left to conclude that Mr. Sulieman Abba is obviously sympathetic to the PDP and would rather protect the interest of the party than that of the generality of Nigerians.”
Meanwhile, Governor Amaechi has warned that if the current clampdown on APC members continues, then the party will not accept the March 28th and April 11th governorship polls’ results.
Amaechi lamented that the police have left their duty to pose opposition to APC, adding that, “for me, what is happening is outrageous, it’s either they put the police on the ballot or the police should leave us alone to battle PDP freely and fairly in the court of the electorate.”
He noted that, “if the police are removed from the ballot, we will accept the results because for now, the elections are between Rivers police and the people.”
