Umeh Promises To Sponsor Bill Against Road Blocks
The APGA candidate
for Anambra Central Zone, Chief Victor Umeh, has promised to sponsor a bill preventing officials of the Nigeria Customs Service from harassing traders once a good was cleared at the border entries, if elected.
Umeh, who is also the National Chairman of APGA, said this while addressing traders of Electrical Appliances Dealers Market, Obosi near Onitsha, during a campaign tour.
He said all over the world, customs officials stayed at the borders and at the ports to carry out their inspection.
‘But it is unwholesome a situation where customs officials will clear a container for delivery at the ports only to turn around and mount road blocks at Ore and Benin to harass traders, especially those from South-East, over the same containers they have cleared at the ports.
“If there was something wrong with the container or goods, why did they clear it at the wharf in the first place?
“I have vowed to sponsor a bill that will permanently get the customs out of the roads as soon as I get to the Senate,’’ he said.
The APGA national chairman also said that if elected, he would ensure the full implementation of the resolutions of the National Conference.
Umeh said that he had successfully agitated for the immediate creation of an additional state in the South-East.
Earlier, the President-General of South-East Amalgamated Traders’ Association (SEAMATAS), Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo, extolled the virtues of Umeh.
Ezenwankwo commended Umeh’s efforts at the national conference and assured him of the support of Anambra traders.
“Senate is for those who have the clout to speak up for people’s interest; I know Umeh will not relent to fight for traders especially South-East traders’ interest at the National Assembly,’’ he said.
