Truck and tanker
drivers operating within Harbour/Industry Roads, in Port Harcourt have cried out to the government over the deplorable condition of the roads.
The drivers, who spoke through their Public Relations Officer (PRO) under the auspices of Tanker, Truck Drivers Union, Habour-Industry Road branch, Elder Emeka Chukwudi, said the roads have become  death traps.
Chukwudi said the condition of the roads always give them great concern as they spent huge sums in fixing bolt-joints and tyres after plying the roads, saying that all efforts to rehabilitate the roads proved abortive despite the tax and other dues paid to the government.
The image maker noted that it is disheartening that operators of the roads have been neglected by the government, stressing that as law abiding citizens and tax payers, they deserve better social amenities as they operate commercial heavy duty trucks and tankers.
He said life is even as risky while conveying goods, products and services to and from the oil companies operating in the area as well as at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Rivers Port, stressing that there is urgent need for government to come to their aid and save them from spending unnecessary money from fixing or repairing their trucks and tankers daily.
He, however, lauded the state government for its road rehabilitation projects in the state, and enjoined them to keep up the tempo.
The spokesman also enjoined the members to exercise some patience hoping that as a listening government, he is optimistic that they would come to their aid.
