Taekwondo Expert Wants Use Of ESS At GAmes
The Technical Director of Lagos State Taekwondo Association (LSTA), Sunday Anani, has decried non-usage of Electronic Scoring System ESS at the Lagos State Schools Sports Festival.
The competition tagged “Ibile Games’’ began on January 26. It will end on February 6.
Anani told newsmen in Lagos that the scoring machine would help to uphold standards in the competition, saying, “points awarded manually are not acceptable.
“The system is recommended by the international body for use in championships all over the world, and here we are holding a competition of this magnitude without the use of the device.
“We were told to score athletes manually but the truth is that it will not be in the best interest of the competition and the athletes; standards must be upheld.
“How can we have the device and cannot use it during major competitions; this is an opportunity to expose our young and upcoming taekwondoists to the widely acceptable scoring system,’’ he said.
According to him, the use of the device will guard against unfair officiating and undue award of points.
He however expressed delight in the turnout of athletes for the event.
“I must say that the turnout of athletes for teakwondo is very impressive and the level of skills displayed by athletes very commendable.
“This is an indication that talents abound in Lagos and that the future of the game is bright.
“That Lagos is blessed with the teakwondists that have been representing the country in international competitions is a thing of joy; even at the school level, many athletes are showing brilliant performances,’’ he said.
Anani said that the Ibile Games would assist in identifying more talents to be groomed to stardom.
He said that the games would also serve as a build up for the 19th National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Calabar in April.
