The Rivers State Government has signed an engineering procurement contract with a Chinese firm, Jiangsu First Electric Power Construction Company for the construction of the 1,000- bed Justice Karibi Whyte Specialist Hospital at the Greater Port Harcourt, at the cost $300 million (about N56.7 billion).
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker said that contract for the construction of the hospital had earlier been signed between the government and Clinotec, but was terminated due to irreconcilable differences with the contractor.
The commissioner said that although many foreign partners had indicated interest to take over the project, the Rivers State Government finally settled for the Jiangsu First Electric Power Construction Company of China.
The commissioner, who expressed concern over the attitude of some contractors, expressed hope that the new firm will fast track the completion of the project which according to him will help reduce the disease burden of the state and make Rivers State the destination for the best health care services.
The representative of the Chinese Government, Julie Zhu assured of the commitment by the company to mobilize resources to ensure the completion of the project.
Zhu further assured that the project will be completed in two years.
The MoU signing ceremony was presided over by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Wogu Boms.
