Rivers State Government yesterday swinged into action to avert strike by medical doctors under the aegis of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) after three of its members were kidnapped by unknown hoodlums.
Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr. Furo Green had led members of the association on a protest to Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday, where they met Governor Chibuike Amaechi in a closed door meeting.
Green, who spoke to reporters after the meeting, disclosed that the governor had given them assurance that efforts were being made by government and security agencies to address the plight of doctors, who in the past one week had become target to kidnappers.
He said, “the governor assured us that the security strategies that used to work in the state before now that apparently collapsed due to the political challenges have been re-energised, and that we expect to start seeing results in the next one week”.
The Rivers State NMA chairman expressed hope in the pledge of the governor, saying “he assured us that security of our colleagues was top of the agenda during their security meeting today and that has gone a long way to re-assure us”.
According to him, security of members living in the Abuloma area needed to be beefed up, since three of its members kidnapped were from the area, and further disclosed that an elaborate meeting will be held with Governor Amaechi today to sort out other grey areas of concern to the association.
He dismissed claims that the body threatened to go on strike, stating that doctors will resort to protest to press home their demands.
