Police Committee To Reduce Communal Crises
Assistant Inspector-Gen
eral of Police (AIG) Christopher Dega, said the Police Committee on Prevention and Management of Communal crises would reduce communal clashes in the country to the barest minimum.
Dega, who is the AIG in-charge of Zone 8, gave the assurance at a town-hall meeting of the seven-member committee and some stakeholders in Awka on Wednesday.
According to him, the objective of the committee is to serve as intermediary between communities in crisis all over the country.
Dega expressed concern over the increasing rate of communal crises in the country and urged communities to channel their reports to the committee to help maintain peace and order.
“The aim of our visit to the state is to advocate for peace, preach non-violence and emphasise the need for dialogue in resolving crisis.
“As a committee, we are expected to submit a comprehensive report with recommendations to the Inspector-General of Police (I-G) who in turn is expected to execute some of the recommendations.
“Those beyond him, will be referred to the various governments for further action so that in the end there will be peace in the various communities and the country.
“A society that is crime-free is the passion the I-G had when he inaugurated the committee in November 2014,” Dega, who is the chairman of the committee, said.
He disclosed that the committee had visited Nassarawa, Plateau, Cross River and Kaduna states, adding that Anambra was the sixth state being visited.
In his speech, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Hassan Karma, commended the various communities involved in land disputes in the state for not resorting to violence.
Karma advised them to sustain the peace and follow legal means in the pursuit of their interests.
Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra, who earlier received the committee at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia, near Awka, commended the I-G for the initiative.
“Your assignment is an important one and I must commend the I-G for initiating the idea because through your intervention, a lot of crises would have been resolved,” Obiano said.
The governor appealed to the committee to look into the boundary crisis between the state and Kogi.
