Orji Lauds World Igbo Union
Governor Theodore
Orji of Abia on Friday lauded the efforts of the World Igbo Union, a socio-cultural organisation, for protecting the Igbo culture and language from extinction.
Speaking at the union’s annual summit in Umuahia, Orji said he was delighted that it was making efforts to sustain Igbo traditions, language and heritage from going into extinction.
Orji, who was represented by an aide, Chief Chijioke Onwutuebe, said “the Igbo race has the duty to adopt and maintain the values that our forefathers handed over to us”.
Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who chaired the summit, said the event was a platform for the Igbo to evaluate their culture and custom to improve them.
“It is important for the present generation of the Igbo to note that they are offspring of men and women who made various positive contributions to the growth of our present society.
“History can prove that people of Igbo extraction have held positions of power from pre-independence era till date in Nigeria.
“We must then forge ahead and consolidate our strength, language, tradition and custom to remain relevant in today’s world,’’ he said.
On his part, Chief Meshack Nnanta, the Chairman of the group, said the union had the desire to contribute to the establishment of good governance in country.
Nnanta said the summit was organised to encourage the people’s cultural emancipation, adding: “Our people are always propelled to identify with causes that will protect the interest of the Igbo.”
