Obiano Distributes Rice To Pensioners
Governor Willie Obiano of
Anambra State has donated 2,660 bags of rice to retired primary school teachers and local government pensioners in the state.
Donating the items to the pensioners at the Independence Square, Amawbia, Obiano said that their welfare would remain a priority throughout his administration.
He said the beneficiaries were retired primary school teachers and local government workers from Anaocha, Awka North, Awka South, Dunukofia and Njikoka Local Government Areas of the state.
The governor recalled that the government had offset N1.8 billion pension arrears and had since maintained regular monthly payment in line with his promise to deliver on human development and infrastructure.
Obiano said the government would give Awka a befitting capital status and announced that work would soon commence on the Ukwu-Oji and Isi-Agu road.
He urged the people to give the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) a resounding victory in the forthcoming elections to consolidate on the good governance in the state.
The State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mrs Azuka Enemuo, said that over 10,000 pensioners would benefit from the exercise across the state.
Enemuo said the government had paid over N42 billion pension arrears owed since 1999.
She said the state secretariat of the pensioners’ association had been completed and would soon be inaugurated.
A pensioner, Mr Felix Okafor, expressed gratitude to the governor for the gesture.
Another pensioner, Mrs Kate Chikweobi, prayed that God would endow the governor with wisdom to pilot the affairs of the state.
