NSE To Inaugurate Committee On Building Collapse

Society of Engineers, Ebonyi State, Mr Nwali Etche, has assured that committee of selected professionals will be inaugurated to reduce incidence of building collapse in the state.
Etche, who disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Abakaliki, said the committee would be known as Engineering Regulations Monitoring (ERM).
He said the committee to be inaugurated would include representatives of senior police officers, professionals in engineering, ministry of lands, surveyors and state capital territory.
According to him, the committee to be inaugurated soon will ensure surveillance of professionals and craftsmen with a view to preventing building collapse.
He said the committee will also assist to eject imposters and check unprofessionalism.
He said incidence of building collapse is alarming but will be confronted by ERM both in the rural areas, in building bridges, roads, among others.
“ERM will work like the police; they will monitor; they will identify and persecute any unapproved structure, unregistered professionals and imposters operating without licence.
“Police would be deployed for these services; there must be safety of lives and property.
“ERM can stop or sue any builder without specification or approval; they can also arrest and prosecute professionals who fail to build according to the specification,” he said.
“Structures specification must be approved by the body for test and re-validation to avoid any occurrence of building collapse,” he said.
