NGO Tasks Police On Human Rights During Polls

An NGO in Akwa Ibom,
Community Policing Partners for Justice, Security and Social Reforms, has urged police personnel to respect the rights of Nigerians during the forthcoming general elections.
The Executive Director of the NGO, Mr Saviour Akpan, made the call while speaking with newsmen in Abak near Uyo.
He said the police should not to take advantage of the “tense situation” to violate human rights during the polls.
“The primary duty of the Nigeria Police is to ensure a safe and peaceful environment and this can be achieved through partnership with the citizens.
“We as major stakeholders in community policing are using this medium to call on the officers of the Nigeria Police to respect human rights while doing their jobs.
“This we urge they should do before, during and after the elections,” he said.
Akpan further appealed to the police to always work in accordance with the dictates of the code of conduct guiding their duty.
“Given the fact that they are coordinating security matters for the forthcoming elections, they should try and work in accordance to the dictate of code of conduct guiding their functions.”
