National League To Commence April 18
The Nigeria National
League season for 2014/2015 will start on April 18 after the country’s general elections according to the chairman of the league body, Chief Emeka Inyama.
He also disclosed that the annual Super 4 tournament aimed to determine the best club in the lower league for last season will hold between 23 and 25 February in Ilorin.
Inyama told newsmen that due to security challenges in the north and other important reasons, the lower league season would be an abridged format where there shall be four groups of eight teams each.
The NFF board member enthused that the new arrangement would save cost and also ensures that the league season rounds off at the exact period it ought to despite the late start.
Inyama, who also doubles as the chairman of Abia Warriors noted that the coming political environment in the country made it imperative for the lower league body to fix a date that won’t conflict with the general elections.
“I am happy to announce to you that the league season will take off on April 18 and the Super Four will be held in Ilorin from February 23 to 25, Inyama said.
“We are not going to have the conventional season of two groups like we had until last season. We shall further split both the Group One and Two into further two groups of eight teams on each group.
“The matches will be few and it will save cost too. We are also going ahead of the Super Four which will be on knock out basis in Ilorin. Even though 3SC, Gabros, Wikki Tourists and Kwara United have qualified for the premier league, we are yet to determine the winner of the NNL for last season. The games will also serve as pre season matches for them,” he concluded.
