‘I Am A Lucky Coach’
Côte d’Ivoire coach Hervé
Renard has admitted that they were lucky after scooping the continental crown at the Africa Cup of Nations Equatorial Guinea 2015.
The Elephants stunned Ghana in a dramatic penalty shootout in Bata on Sunday night following a goalless final, to repeat their feat of 1992 against the same Black Stars in Dakar.
“We are lucky, we were down 0-2 and we came back from behind,” the Frenchman told newsmen at the end of the match.
“The two teams were tired after five games. It’s coming from God, but you have to be strong.
“It’s like in 1992. I believe in history and I am a lucky coach,” Renard added, before paying tribute to Ivoirian legend Didier Drogba who retired from international duties last summer.
“It’s a shame Drogba is not here. He deserves it. You don’t achieve something in just one month.
“The team spirit made the difference.”
Hervé Renard is the first coach to claim two AFCON trophies with two different teams following his continental success with Zambia in 2012.
