FUTA Undergraduate Develops Fish, Livestock Feed Formulator
A 23-year old Fisheries
and Aquaculture Technology undergraduate of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Ondo State, Mr. Ajayi Nurudeen Oladele has developed an animal-feed formulation software called Easy Fish Formulator.
In an interview with The Tide source recently Oladele disclosed that he was inspired to develop the software which would make calculation of feed easier for Nigerian farmers in comparison to the existing system and technology that uses an excel sheet formula that can only be operated by specialists.
According to him, with Easy-Fish, the expense in cured by farmers during the culture period can be reduced, as feeding constitutes over 70 per cent of the production cost in aquaculture or livestock production.
He said with its use, production of feed and availability of fish at further affordable prices will be feasible.
The Aquaculture software which is peculiar to the fisheries and aquaculture sub-sector in Nigeria has been designed to function as a downloadable application for andvoid devices and computers of all types.
One other important aspect of the software is that it incorporates the three national languages (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba) to facilitate the ease of use for rural farmers as well as those not familiar with scientific names of culturable fish species in Nigeria.
Incorporating a user friendly interface with simple instructions, the application contains over 80 conventional and non-conventional feedstuff and ingredient that are available for farmers to use and have been approved by animal nutritionists.
Outlining the uniqueness of the “app” the FUTA undergraduate stated that unlike other existing applications which require the user to provide the crude protein of the feed ingredients as well as requests classification of the feed as either basal or protein before it can be used, the EasyFish feed formulator saves the user time as it has all the requirements programmed into the ‘apps’.
